Try and find a rockabilly type barber, I've heard only good things about a lot of those kinds of places not having issues with gender and stuff.

I doubt it. That is really awful and they shouldnt have rejected you like that! Going to a barber and even to a salon and wanting to cut your hair pretty short is definitely a hassle!
